Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#67,270 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

As tennis memoirs go, this is decent. It certainly wins in straight sets over "Andre's Complaint" - Agassi's long-winded rant about how much he hated tennis, how his life sucked, and so on. Of course, Connors makes that point, and he pulls no punches regarding his views on Agassi and many others on the tour.Connors is like Popeye; throughout the book, he might as well be saying "I Am What I Am," and that's fine. He apologizes for some of the stupid things he did, including the affair he had that almost destroyed his marriage, his gambling, and so on. But for the most part his approach is to say "take me as I am, or don't waste your time." It's refreshing in a time when we prefer our bad boy heroes to weep and exude remorse, sincere or not.Does this make for great reading (no one, not even Connors, would claim this is "literature")? Not really. It's a very easy, quick read, and it's anything but profound. However, it makes for a fun read on a three- or four-hour flight, and then you can pick up Proust or something else of a more weighty nature. As an aside (I don't like to base my reviews on the format or price of the book), this is one of the few e-books that I've downloaded, and it explains why I prefer my books to be, well, books. There are no photos (i understand that the book had photos), and the weird hyphenations and other technoglitches throughout make me wish that I had the paperback. Just sayin....

It's a damn good book written by an all time damn great athlete. Movie material. History. Hollywood movie stars, icons, wine, women, gambling and song. At it's core is a story of a journey to the top paved by a wager his mom waged; she groomed Connors from the age of 5 to be the tennis version of a martial arts warrior. If you followed @JimmyConnors' career you've witnessed him come perilously close to death only to snatch the stake from his would-be assassin's hands. It was true on the court and in his personal life. As much as Connors valued every trophy he won, until they grow arms to hug him they pale in comparison to his wife and kids. It's all in the book.Where does Connor rank as a tennis player? The skinny: he was ranked #1 five years in a row and in 8 different years; in top 3 for 13 straight years; won a record 109 ATP tournaments; he won grand slams on every surface. You value quality over quantity? Connors beat all time greats on clay, grass and hard courts in the finals of grand slams: Borg on clay at the US Open; McEnroe on grass at Wimbledon; and Lendl on hard court at the US Open.Had Connors played all the slams in his prime and had they been surfaced like they are now I'd bet my house that Connors wins 18-22 of them. Apples to Apple: Connors won 109 ATP titles, Federer won 91. Had Federer beat Nadal in the finals at the French Open he'd have come closer to equalling Connors all-around-play genius. If my life is on the line and you're flipping the coin to decide the surface the match is played on, I want Connors playing that match for me for one simple reason: It's my best hope for survival. The great baseline ground-stroker had an all court game as evidenced by his doubles grand slams.Connors' biggest sin might have been his longevity. Yes, it, along with his attitude and never give up spirit, helped lift tennis to a sport viewed by the masses, but it also caused John McEnroe to start wielding a racket with a billboard-size head and sweet-spot just to keep up with the resurgent Connors in 1984. That sea change in pro tennis enabled less skilled taller one dimensional players to be more competitive. Suddenly, you could be less accurate with your swing and shots. Connors second rise to the top following his marriage "sabbatical" led to his two greatest rivals throwing in the towel in different ways: McEnroe switched to a gigantic racket with training wheels on it and Bjorn Borg retired young and left a good looking tennis-corpse and myth. Connors was the man. Thanks to video tape, the record book and his autobiography "The Outsider" he won't be the forgotten man.--- @HeadlineZooo

This book is exactly what I would expect from Jimmy Connors. No holds barred. He is unflinchingly honest of his failings which include gambling and adultery but he still comes across as a sometimes bad guy who wants to be the always good guy but has just a little too much reckless in him. His tennis speaks for itself, so many singles titles and majors and then he went out on the Champions tour once his competitive days were behind him. I enjoyed the stories of his youth and was touched by the love he had for his mother and grandmother in particular. I remember the press being critical of his mother at times, and Jimmy sets that straight in this book. I enjoyed the stories of the other guys of his era, Nastase, Borg, McEnroe, Newcombe, Laver, and Gerulaitis among others. I also enjoyed the Evert/Connors story which sounds like it was something that really was more about other people wanting that relationship. He was very honest about his marriage including the time he strayed and realized what he was about to lose and set things straight. I'm happy that he was able to do that. I used to love watching this man play. He was a blast to watch. He was the Rafa Nadal of his time. The guy who played every point at 100% and for whom the match is never over until the umpire and score calls it over. Rafa is a little more humble off the court but I see the same competitive qualities in him that I did in Jimmy. Jimmy always could paint the lines with his shots and his return of serve was the best in the game, at least till Agassi came along and then it might have been surpassed. His mother, as his coach was the one who told him to take the ball early and gave him the basics of his game that led him to be one of the most successful players of all time. I loved the story of the T-2000 racket he used which was so distinctive and how he came to use it and what it took to replace the beloved style when it was no longer made. The game is so different now given the line call challenge system and the replays showing whether the ball was in or out. Jimmy and McEnroe would have been decidedly less fun to watch today without all of their antics with the umpires and line judges. I always enjoyed seeing Jimmy play. He was one of my tennis heroes of this game that I have loved for so long. I enjoyed learning more about what makes him tick. Thanks Jimmy for sharing your tales with us.
