I have used this new interpretation of the I Ching for many years and found it very useful. The Sorrells' paraphrases of the traditional texts into modern language are immediate and accessible.They describe and recommend a simplified method of casting an oracle that uses six coins -- five pennies and one dime -- that always gives a changing line, and only one at that. Personally, I prefer the traditional method casting three coins of the same type six times, as that allows for more changing lines, or none for that matter. Even so, the Sorrells' texts are just as useful no matter what coin-toss method one uses.Also, I still find it best to compare their versions with others, e.g. the Wilhelm/Baines, as sometimes the Sorrells omit certain possible interpretations of an element, or have only a limited take on an issue. On the other hand, the Sorrells' versions often have new takes of their own that add to the other versions, so these can compliment each other most effectively.Recommended!

We happened upon this book the first time through a special course on this subject being offered, and found this book to be very user friendly for a topic which is not always presented in an easy way and with interesting reading, so we sought this book through Amazon and found it, because friends of ours wanted to be able to procure a copy of this book and were unable at the time to sign on to the course being offered previously for a limited time only. Our friends also found this book delightful interesting reading, because they, too, had had experiences with other books on this subject which were explanatory but we all found many of the other books to be dry reading and hard to study for that reason, even though we really were all interested in learning more about I Ching. So, we hope this book continues to stay in print should others we know also be seeking a book which really makes them feel like reading it from cover to cover which is what we all did, without much distraction. We all feel blessed when we find interesting books on subjects we want to study more about which holds our attention. Good reading and blessings to all.

I had a paperback copy of this book years ago, and I regretted letting it go ever since. Now, I have another copy again, thanks to Amazon. This really is an excellent, modern, down to earth interpretation of the i ching that I have found easy to use. I really don't do many reviews on Amazon, but this book has gotten me through a lot of tough times. I'm going through rough times now and I'm glad to have the guidance and advice of this book.

The title says it all: made easy! I was sick of complicated explanations on how to use the I Ching. Growing up as a child, my mother used to own an easy version too and it was wonderful. This one is even better. Nicely simplified and explained. (Ps* not necessary to buy any special coins or dice).

My most favorite book on I Ching. I bought one years ago and use it regularly. I just bought another for my daughter because she uses mine all the time.

Everyday meanings for the hard to interpret reader of the iching. I ching is confusing to understand, this book helps alot. The best part is the examples. Those examples make the iching easier. I just wish there was a example for every line in the book. They give like 2 examples for each page.

I saw the movie first and even though it's still great, I believe the book is far above it.After a bunch of mysterious incidents in Costa Rica, a team of experts is summoned to the new island resort of a biotech company and soon discover it is home to genetically recreated dinosaurs. However, it soon becomes apparent that those running the park have arrogantly overestimated their control over nature. A corporate espionage plot is just the final nail in the coffin needed to tip the park into total chaos.With scenes of heart-pounding action, terror, and suspense and also interesting characters and fascinating discussions of chaos theory and mankind's hubris, Crichton's novel is truly a great read.

This book is the perfect blend of reality and imagination. I applaud Michael Crichton- this concept is solid as well as reasonable. This book includes all of the character's perspectives, which I find a little confusing at times, but does an awesome job of telling the story. There is equality of all types, as there are two strong female characters, and the book takes place on an island near Costa Rica. The only thing is that this book includes lots of gore, people and animals dying, and a single sexual reference necessary for the storyline. I therefore recommend this to anyone ten years old and above.

Do not push off reading this book because you saw the movie! Steven Spielberg does a solid job at telling the story of the book without spoiling the book. I've never read a Crichton (I can't even pronounce his last name) book before this one. I've seen almost every movie that was inspired from his books though, so indirectly, I'm a fan of the guy. I had no idea how complex his story telling ability was. I have three more of his books lined up just waiting in my "Runner Ups for next read" list. I am so pumped to read them! If they're half as entertaining as this book was, I'll be satisfied.I'll be honest with you though, it is very slowed paced the first 100+ pages, but once you get passed those pages, it shoots off like a freaking rocket and just won't let you jump off.I felt like it was my duty to finish this book.My only complaint is the epilogue, I wish it wasn't in the book. The chapter before the Epilogue ends the book beautifully. You felt an emotional connection with the characters, then the epilogue happens. I won't spoil anything other than the epilogue opens up for 'The Lost World' to begin, I feel obligated now to finish the story. My next read will have to be the sequel to this great story.

I read this years ago and loved it. Â Helluva page turner. Â So when my boss/client told me to pick a popular writer of thriller-type novels, and study one of them to get the tone he wants for his novel, I chose JP because I was familiar with it, not just from having read it but from multiple viewings of the film which I love. Â A familiar work would allow me to study the structure without losing myself in the story. Â I thought. Â Turns out I was dead wrong about that. Â I got caught up immediately.Because I was interested in how it worked as narrated as well as how it read, I purchased the Audible version of it at a discount, and moved back and forth between it and the ebook. Â (By the way, it's nice that at least some Kindles will play the audio right along with the ebook. Â Audio broadens my understanding of a work, and listening while reading, though it slows down the latter dramatically, even though I normally listen at 1.5x the normal speed, is a highly immersive way of approaching the text.But what about the book??? Â Yes, okay I'm getting to that. Â The book. Â Well... It still counts as a page-turner, no question. Â I got caught up in the narrative so often that I found I had to consciously slow down and look for the things I wanted to study. Â Crichton could tell a story! Â And in that respect, he's like Tolkien, a damn fine storyteller, but kind of a crap writer.Yeah, I'm sorry if there are Crichton fans out there foaming at the mouth, but the drawbacks of his writing are so clear, and in some cases so dire, that I couldn't Â overlook them. Â The most egregious problems are his characters. Â None of them have real internal lives. Â Crichton gives lip service to family, exes, jobs and the like, but they're not terribly developed. Â But this is a thriller, you say, they don't have to be. Â And I would agree up to a point. Â But consider:John Hammond is a joke. Â He's an uber rich guy who exists for two reasons: First to pay for and supervise the development of the park, and second, to be annoyed when people tell him the park isn't going to work. Â He's so obtuse that when Ian Malcolm explains things to him, his consistent response is to ask the rest of the people in the room what Malcolm is talking about. Â There's nothing about him that isn't cardboard, and even the cardboard doesn't ring true.Ian Malcolm, or as I like to call him Information Dump Malcolm, exists to explain things. Â From the get go, all he ever does is lecture. Â He doesn't have conversations, he doesn't connect with anyone. Â He's like an AI. Â Say: "Chaos Theory," and off he goes, explaining it. Â Say: "Look, real dinosaurs," and you get pages of explanation about what's wrong with science today. After a while I just skimmed over his dialogue.Â The kids: Â Two of the most utterly pointless, useless characters ever penned. Â Lex is so annoying that I kept hoping the T-Rex would gobble her up like an hors d'oeuvre. Â She never shuts up, never does what she's told, screams, whines, and makes endless noise when everyone is telling her to be quiet or the dinosaurs will eat them. Â She's an insufferable know-it-all, who knows virtually nothing about anything, and doesn't really want to know anything. Â All she wants to do is play "pickle" and whine about how none of this is fun and she's hungry. Â The only time she's bearable is when she's unconscious. Â Tim is a virtual non-entity, but at least he's an improvement over his sister.Everybody else: Almost totally interchangeable except for their area of expertise.I don't really feel like I'm being harsh here either. Â I'm willing to give props for a compelling story told in such a break-neck fashion that had I not been paying close attention to the text, I might never have caught these problems. Or at least they might not have gotten up my nose so completely. Â What you have is a decent thriller with a great plot and a damn good hook: cloning dinosaurs. Â It was timely then and it still is, it plays to our fears and our desires, and Crichton knows how to manipulate both.I think I'm pretty much finished with this book now, I doubt I'll ever need to read it again unless I want to remind myself of the spare, efficient style of it. Â Crichton proved to me that the advice about dialogue -- use "said;" the eye skips right over it -- is completely true. Â His work is an education for any writer, but particularly those who are going to write fast-paced stories. Â He tells a great story, and that's really the bottom line.

This is a very good book, way better than the movie could ever hope to be, but the mass market paperback version is complete garbage. The spelling and grammar mistakes in the book are unimaginable - periods in the middle of sentences, all kinds of extra commas that didn't appear in the original version, dozens of instances of "th" being replaced by "m" (for instance, "mat" instead of "that" and "mere" instead of "there"). The book is incredibly well written but the printer royally f***ed up their job. Buy it at Barnes & Noble and get a copy where you don't constantly have to stop and figure out WTF is supposed to be written there.

I had to wait a long time before I could get this book, and generally, it has been worth the wait! Like Ludovico Sinistrari's "Demonology," this is the rare account by a living person with those peoples of the unobstructed universe which is not condemned or circumscribed by dogma. Like Sinistrari, Kirk was a well-educated person, and no ordinary turtle-eating parson. Although Lang's introduction can be tedious, he had the sense to stay enough out of Kirk's way so as to allow the latter free say. As a person who experiences the Sidhe every day I heartily recommend this book!

The writing and spelling is "quaint" (from around 1690) and you've got to read what looks like a small "f" as an "s", but get around that and this is an honest appraisal from the time of what various "fairy tales" seem to mean. The first half is an Introduction by a more modern writer, who tries to take a more "scientific" viewpoint and is helpful as sort of a point/counterpoint for the survey by Robert Kirk which follows. For a less "scientific" guess at the phenomena, this book is helpful, as is also Cotton Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World."

This essay is written the early 1700's. The punctuation and, spelling was updated. I had a very difficult time understanding much of the text. Writers of this era seem to write "around the idea" using historic references and tangents that only confused me. I used online dictionaries often and still couldn't find some of the words. Perhaps they were Gaelic? I tried to summarize each part and perhaps the book wasn;'t meant to be used this way. If read quickly and superficially the book may be more fun. Sometimes the text tried to instruct the reader in seers; other times there were detailed biblical references; woven in here and there are attempts to define the nature and lives of fairies. For myself I was a difficult read. Perhaps and English or History student would make more sense of this. As a well-meaning objective attempt to collect folklore on fairies by a Christian minister, this work has value. I'm just not the one to totally understand and unravel the mystery of its value.

For someone who's not native in English this book is a no no.It seems to be an old type of English that to me makes no sense.Also the writing is very small and clustered which adds to the already difficult level of reading.

Anyone interested in folklore and forteana should seek out original source material whenever possible, and this is the real deal. Written by a Scottish clergyman who believed his status as a seventh son gave him special insight into the world of Celtic fairydom, this book is a fascinating account of 17th century folk belief, including eyewitness accounts and interesting interpretations of encounters. Andrew Lang's introduction, which is nearly as long as the book, is also well worth reading even if his personal opinions/prejudices overshadow his commentary. Whatever your view of the existence of Otherworld elves and fairies, this book is great food for thought.

The book includes interesting accounts of Scottish lore, and how it complements Christian theology, but the writing is dense, rambling, and hard to follow. Would not have read it had we not heard about the author while we were in Scotland.

An excellent rendition of a period of history in a particular part of Rhodesia during the worse of the war years. The ebb and flow of the terrorist's outages in the beautiful border town of Vic Falls, alongside the fantastic frontage of the Zambesi; the response of the small but highly efficient security forces and the sad neglect of the Western world. A testament to the same neglect so readily adopted time after time by the same Western power since those days. Look what that capitulation got them and ask the same question of most recent escapades around the world. Never put trust in those that have only their self rightousness at heart.

This is one of the finest, best narratives I have ever read. The author speaks from the heart and does not hide behind political correctness, nor does he worry about what others think. This book is filled with bravery, passion, romance, and gives an amazing glimpse into life inside the Rhodesia Regiment during the Bush War. I highly recommend this book not only to the Rhodesian historian, but also anyone who has ever served (in any military). I place this book alongside Chris Cocks' classic 'Fireforce'.

Very well written account of a man who loved his country and fought to save it. A very moving tale. Well written account that draws the reader into a land of wonders caught in the middle of a struggle between western society and communist controlled guerillas. A country that was very misunderstood by the west and sold out for political reasons.

I've just finished reading "A Walk Against the Stream" by Tony Ballinger. This is a well written true story about Tony's experiences as a National Service officer mostly based at Victoria Falls. The book gives an insight into the lives of ordinary national service troopies as opposed to the usual stories of the elite SAS, RLI, and Selous Scouts soldiers. It also gives a good account of the war actions around Victoria Falls village, most of which were never reported in the Rhodesian news services of the time, and which I had no knowledge of, despite living in the country. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

I have read many books on the Rhodesian WAr and I must sya that this is one of the best. He really does tell the story as it happened and from the eyes of someone who was there. Visits to Victoria Falls will never be the same again! A gread read.

Life in Rhodesia in the mid to late 70â€™s is recounted here in authentic detail. A good addition to the Rhodesian war experience, and the authorâ€™s extremely good recall adds detail to the background. Reading this book was like being there again.

When I first purchased this book, I was looking for Leonardo's drawings, sketches and art studies. For this, the book is fair and has a nice collection of his drawings, even though I wish they were bigger and the printing on paper more vivid. But what really surprised me on this book was his writings on several subjects. Some of his studies on anatomy, perspective, light/shade and his vision on art itself were priceless. Its nice to see a little bit on how this great artist thought. Its also nice to see how persistent and dedicated he was as an artist and how he suggests an artist to go through his studies:"If you wish to have a sound knowledge of the forms of subjects begin with the details of them and do not go on to the second step till you have the first well fixed in memory and in practice. And if you do otherwise you will throw away your time, or certainly greatly prolong your studies"So, if you wish to purchase this book, only for its images, you would do a better deal, purchasing "Leonardo da Vinci: The Complete Paintings and Drawings" from Taschen. But, if you wish to read his notes on several of his drawings, this is the book to purchase.

Great way to get several of Leonardo's notes all in one place. This book focuses on the writings - there are pictures too, but don't expect a picture for everything in the book because they aren't the focus. It can sometimes be difficult to match up the writings with some of the pictures, though I guess this isn't really avoidable. I also bought a separate book that focuses on the pictures, and between the two I am pretty happy.I realize the man left behind something like 6,000 pages of drawings and notes (and who knows how much else lost to time), so it's almost impossible to get all of the notes in one volume and this book does a pretty good job of selecting interesting comments. There are a few things I found myself wishing for here and there, though some of it could be more personal preference than objective omissions.I got this in paperback style, and it is bound fairly well. I do see the pages eventually falling out if I were to read it a lot but not right away.

Sure it's not the complete works; however, you can find them in most college libraries. This is a handy personal collection with excellent quality reproductions of the illustrations.

This book far exceeded my expectations. The reproductions of the sketches are excellent varied and profuse. I especially enjoy reading the vignettes accompanying them, As an artist, I feel having this as a reference is consistently supportive of much of my creative efforts. I bought a "used" book and the condition was much better than what I expected. I definitely have no regrets.

Humbling... to say the least. His sentiments are poetry-as if he speaking to me, and me alone.He's a remarkale man.

This book (I have both the Kindle and Paper Back) is my new buddy. I actually take it with me to Starbucks , to bed, to chit chats with my buddies.....but more importantly is why?This ETF for Dummies is John Bogle's "Common Sense Investing" and Benjamin Graham's "Intelligent Investing" synthesized into one enjoyable read plus much much more!!The other reviews describe the details. I simply like THE STYLE of presentation! The book is like having the stock broker on the phone when ever I wish , when I need guidance or a definition or an explanation as to the strategy and vocabulary of Wall Street. Russell writes as if it is a phone conversation with his client. The best part is there is NO HUSTLE. There definitely is with my Broker. So I look things up , get solid portfolio plans and options and I can call him back by lifting up the book and looking at the glossary, index or table of contents to get back in conversation with Russell.Russell tells me , hey , you want to get complicated here is where to look. Complicated is not in this book , but you have all the references to get further details clearly printed in this book.The Kindle Edition allows me to immediately go to sites on the web he is referencing or even to ETF's I wish to look up while I am reading, without going over to my computer. Way Cool!!!

I recently inherited $70k and have been trying to figure out what to do with it. The information in this book has been very helpful to me in learning more about Exchange Traded Funds. Not only is the book educational, but it is very practical. The author makes a very compelling argument for investing in ETFs. The For Dummies books are very, very underrated in my opinion. It is worth a look.

For someone, without a lot of knowledge about investing, this book was great! Wild did recommend Investing for Dummies be read first and I did that - it was very helpful as well. If you want to take charge of your investments and stop paying crazy high management fees to 'financial planners' that are nothing more than sales people - I have had two such financial planners - then this book is for you. I am Canadian, so I am now reading Wild's Canadian version of the book. It was not out when I read this book, or I would have simply read the Canadian version. Be prepared to do a lot of work and really think about this book while you are reading it - for me it was not a book that I read before bed - it was more a book that I read with pen and paper in hand. But it is well worth it!

This is a good read for those interested in ETFs. It covers the background and context a potential investor needs to understand the pros/cons of Exchange Traded Funds versus other investment vehicles like mutual funds or stocks. Dummies is very well presented and includes a number of options to put together various portfolios based on investor interest/life stage. Very good review of the players, history and differences among the rapidly expanding ETF world. VERY importantly the author spells out for even novice consumers what to look for in cost structure so they can understand how NOT to be taken advantage of - which can happen easily in the financial world.

Wild is an entertaining writer and he covers the subject very well. He shows how an individual can hold a diversified portfolio with a handful of ETFs. Index ETFs also have very low expense ratios. Actively managed funds often cost between 1% and 2% per year while some ETFs have a cost of 1/20%! It seems to me that ETFs are going to become more popular with individual investors year after year. It is a good idea to become familiar with them. The times they are a chaingin'.

I think this treatment of ETFs is all most people will ever need to gain and understanding of the security, how to select ETFs and how they help diversify portfolios.Investment professional (like me) will find the book to be a worthwhile, quick read and food for thought as well.

It's a quick and easy to understand read. I feel much more confident about investing in ETFs, both equity and bond. After reading this book, provided you agree with Russell's investing advice, you'll have a good knowledge base to build your portfolio using ETFs. I just bought the Bonds for Dummies book to complement this one, and so far it's been a good read as well.
