This is one of the most useful gardening books I have ever purchased. I originally got it from my local library and was so impressed with it I went looking for my own copy. I'm grateful it was located on Amazon. I am not a new gardner but I found so much useful information from starting seeds indoors to building raised bed structures to planning perennial and annual borders to growing shrubs and trees, to learning about composting. This book is just chalk full and the photographs which illustrate it are just scrumptious. I highly recommend it, especially if you are just starting to learn about gardening. Please note, there are several regional editions. Find one for your region and enter gardening bliss.
There were several gardens in this book that I plan to copy exactly- right down to the last plant. The garden layouts are attractive and use plants that are tough and easy to grow here, and have long bloom periods. The color combinations were pleasing and colorful without being chaotic. There may be a few plants in here that cannot be grown in all places in the southeast- Blue ginger and Firespike come to mind, but you should be able to easily replace those with plants that grow in your area. There are also lots of area specific gardens- for around pools, on a slope, at the edge of the woods, etc. I wish there had been one for the front of the house too.I am an experienced gardener but needed some help with design and layout and this was exactly what I was looking for. On the whole I think it would be helpful for anyone, but someone new to the area or a new gardener might need a reference book (The Southern Living Garden Book is my favorite) to go with it. This book saved me thousands in professional landscaping- I can't recommend it enough.
I love this book. It has so many great ideas that I could actually see myself implementing. It is very practical (not quite so over-the-top as Southern Living, where everything looks like the very well-to-do live there) but also inspiring. I have bookmarked a number of pages with ideas to try.
This is a great source of ideas for companion plantings. The book is organized into three sections - The start is a selection of 27 professional designs. See pictures of professionally designed gardens and what works well together. There is a discussion of the design and why it works. The next section is a short section containing each of the plants used earlier. The last section is a brief guide on planting and garden installation. It would be better if the first two sections were more extensive, but this is a complete book that will get the beginner started, and give ideas even to a more experienced gardener.
Very comprehensive book for Southern landscaping. Very well organized with helpful sections including how the plants look during each season. Lots of photos of the plants and helpful suggested layouts for landscaping. Great go to resource.
I bought several gardening books when I moved to North Carolina, and this is my favorite by far!! It includes complete garden plans you can use as they are, or you can use the plans to make one of your own with these as a guide. The book also includes "how-to" for many basic garden projects.
Very nice book with pictures and layout ideas for landscaping. Particularly enjoy the representations of the same garden spring/summer/fall/winter.
Very well written. Lots of pictures and illustrations. This book covers plant information and design specifics. It has helped me understand some simple rules of design that are very helpful in many situations. Not too basic but not too complicated for a novice. Well worth the money!
