"Enameling on Metal Clay" is an excellent guide to both working with metal clay and the enameling process, almost like getting two books in one! We have just started to experiment with making jewelery to augment our retail line in my wife's small business and we have become interested in enameling since we already own a kiln. We selected this book based on the large number of positive, helpful reviews and I am pleased to say it was a very good choice.The book is divided between two main sections, "Getting Started" and "Projects". "Getting Started" contains all of the basic information needed, including the required materials, tools, and procedures. The "Projects" section has eight practical projects that are quite nice and are designed to develop the skills needed to move onto more complicated challenges. Both sections are presented in very easy to follow formats with helpful pictures. There is also a good section on troubleshooting and an outstanding gallery of pictures.This is one of the better craft books I have seen and it will likely be my "go to" resource.Highly recommended!CFH
I rarely write reviews but I think this one needs it. I purchased this book based on its being targeted at enameling on metal clay and the shining reviews indicating that this was a definitive resource brimming with information. I was expecting a more comprehensive book geared toward dealing with taking metal clay and enamel to the extraordinary. This book is not that. I am actually returning this book and I blame the reviews not the book itself.This is great book for beginners. Ms. East does a nice job with clear instructions and helpful pictures. If you are just starting out with both enamel and metal clay this book is a great introduction. If you are looking for more it is best skipped.
Enameling On Metal Clay gives specific information on combining two complicated arts/crafts, metal clay (fine silver) and enameling. Plenty of books tackle one or the other, but not both. Her set up info for enameling is great for beginners as is her tip for removing enamel from disappointing pieces. The projects are good, but I found the info in the first part of the book--including which enamel colors do not work on fine silver--more necessary. Strict beginners for either or both mediums might be advised to get some of the learning curve (in other words, gain experience through practice) before tackling this book.
I've always wanted to learn how to add enamel to my work. This book not only gives instruction on enameling, but also provides instruction on the basics of metal clay. The instructions are well written and accompanied by full-color photos. The book also contains a helpful section on troubleshooting the most common problems that you may encounter while enameling.
Good information and background.
Even if you don't use this process on PMC, the instructions are excellent for any metal enameling. Great illustrations and information for exact PMC glass enameling. Thanks!
