This book describes the relationships that were formed between a family exploring NW Greenland and the indigenous population. It illustrates the hardships and realities of living in such a harsh climate, exacerbated by the extent to which the small community was isolated from the rest of the world. The author and her baby daughter learn the language and form strong bonds with the people. What took place is both uplifting and, in parts, sad. After reading the book, you'll want to search the internet to learn more about what has happened since that time.
This is a rather tame, but accurate recounting of Marie Herbert's daily life during the time she spent among the Inuit in Greenland. It is more of a historical document than a novel, but very informative.
I stumbled across this book when going through some old books we had stored. What a find. I really enjoyed reading about the adventures of a family living in a harsh but loving environment. I agree with an earlier reviewer. I have wanted to and started to search the internet to learn more. I had never heard anything about the author, Marie Herbert, or her husband Wally Herbert. This book has wetted my appetite to learn more about Greenland and the polar region.Very glad I read this book.
