Another biography on gunfighter / killer John Wesley Hardin. Certainly closer to the facts than Hardin's self-aggrandizing autobiography.

At the very end of his long Hollywood career, John Wayne portrayed a famous gunfighter, dying of cancer, and struggling to understand a changing world at the dawn of a new era. It was Wayne's final film, shot three years before he himself died of cancer. Towards the conclusion of the film, Wayne's character chooses to go out on his own terms and dies in a violent gunfight in a saloon. Over the years, its been suggested that real gunfighter John Wesley Hardin served as the inspiration for the Wayne's character. If true, its and understandable scenario. Like the screen version that John Wayne portrays in "The Shootist", we get the impression that Hardin died appropriately as he lived, murdered at the very sunset of his era and at the dawn of a new and strange century.Though not as famous now as Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, or Jesse James, John Wesley Hardin remains a very familiar gunfighter of the Wild West. Though fewer Hollywood films have been made about his life, or books written on his violent escapades, he is nevertheless a very memorable figure to even the most casual fan of frontier history. Though he may not have really killed 44 men, he certainly killed many, and his gunfights are notorious, and his own violent death at the hand of John Selman serves as a prime example of what many of these types of men had to look forward to when it was all over.Published just three years before Leon Metz's own solid biography on Hardin, Richard Marohn's volume traces Hardin's life from childhood to murder and introduces readers to a cast of supporting players who all seem more dangerous than any stock character a Hollywood screenwriter could invent. It outlines Hardin's earliest shootings, his life as cowboy and outlaw, fighter of feuds, fugitive, prisoner and gun-toting lawyer. Its final chapters trace Hardin's time in 1890s El Paso, a bordertown with a deadly reputation facing the coming of a new century. Its a place that seems to be an appropriate setting for Hardin's demise.Marohn's book is a dense, but fast read. It's a well researched and well written biography.
