Tom Digby is professor of philosophy at Springfield College in Massachusetts. He has written, lectured, and taught about gender for more than twenty-five years. His multimedia talks about the intersections of love, masculinity, and war have been given at numerous colleges and universities. His previous book is Men Doing Feminism.

This is a long−overdue recommendation for the book Love and War: How Militarism Shapes Sexuality and Romance by Tom Digby. Dr. Digby is a feminist philosopher, a brilliant man, my former college roommate and a very dear friend. He’s written an amazing book that looks at the effects of a warrior−culture, like the USA, on gender roles in society. It’s eye−opening, fascinating, perceptive, highly articulate, and both amusing and horrifying at times. It’s written in a very accessible, even conversational, style. Not many books make you look at things with a new viewpoint, but this one will if you approach it with an even partly open mind. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you add it to your Must Read list.
Tom Digby’s Love and War sets out to understand a puzzling fact about us. We believe in the power of romantic love to give us happy lives. We also believe that there is a battle between the sexes, that relations between men and women are the source of endless conflict. How, asks Digby, can both of those be true?Digby examines in careful detail the relations between men and women, and the way most of us think about them. He provides a good deal of evidence to show that gender relations and their paradoxes are the result of us living in a militarized society, where men must expect to fight and, if necessary, die to defend their country.The book may leave some readers understanding the world better--especially the world of love between men and women. Others may be offended, or reject Digby’s thesis. But he has plenty of evidence. The book is chockful of references to current events, to popular culture and to the opinions of many well-known personalities.Whether Digby persuades you or you reject his views, the book is interesting to read, well written, and thought provoking.
A great combination of philosophy and public affairs. Digby offers ideas and perspectives for the reader's consideration rather than pushing a point or conclusion. He also does a great job of suggesting (based on his long experience) how someone might think or feel about an issue or question, then addressing that feeling in a very supportive way. It clearly changed the way I see the world.
A great book on how societies whom are war-reliant impose ideals associated with the military onto the social aspects of society concentrating specifically on sexuality & love.

Digby's book does an outstanding job of addressing issues of gender, femininity, masculinity, and the toxic effects of these ideologies in our society, the world, and each and every one of us.
Tom Digby has written an accessible and thoughtful book for readers to engage a philosophical conversation about feminism, militarism and violence. Digby supports his philosophical perspective with ample and convincing evidence. We invited college faculty and students to read the book prior to Digby's lecture on our campus. The combination of book and lecture was excellent.
