Kevin Hong's lessons on navigating through business and life are Gold. His path defies convention at every twist and turn. His romp through life is heartfelt and there is no shortage of stories that will inspire you to go above and beyond and to think outside the box. He recounts both his failures and success, but it is his perceived flaws that turn out to be blessings, when applied in the right setting and mindset.As an angel investor, I often look for the indomitable spirit exhibited by an entrepreneur so committed to the cause, that s/he is willing to live/breathe the vision no matter how absurd the circumstance. The "Man Van" showcased Kevin's grit, but it's the interesting insights about human nature that Kevin shares, that make each chapter a didactic lesson on life.Three reasons to read The Outlier Approach:1. You think people underestimate you. Good. Blow them away and just go for it. Kevin recounts how he poured over American TV shows and practiced speaking until he spoke English fluently.2. You don't fit the typecast for a particular role nor you are qualified for a job on paper. Who cares? Find a way. Kevin attends an investment banking workshop at a school he doesn't attend and secures multiple interviews by making sure he stands out.3. You want business lessons applicable to life and life lessons applicable to business. I love the chapter on "market making" at a Las Vegas Club. Kevin hustles and connects two groups of people by recognizing the needs of each party.You rarely get to meet someone with Kevin's drive and creativity. If you're looking for a fast-paced book on one person's journey through life using the "outlier approach", this is a must read. My only wish is that Kevin would go deeper into the dynamics of starting a business and choosing the right founders. As unique as his life story may appear on the outset, much of his experience, especially the ones in which he shuffled between two cultures during his early years, resonated with me. Literary folks might appreciate the alternating Korean to American views between each chapter.A fun, engaging read. Highly recommend.
This book is well written and easy to read. I've found this book to be more about the author boasting about himself and his methodology for his success. Great story about overcoming language barriers, but it did not give me any lasting impression to dwell upon.
Congratulations to Kevin for being successful. But this isn't a how-to book (as it's titled), it's a one-off story of his life. I didn't find a lot of lessons to be learned here, but if you are easily inspired and looking for a modicum of inspiration, maybe you'll enjoy it. Personally I think this entire book experiment follows the direction of the multi-level marketing he talks about participating in at the beginning of it. Nothing new under the sun or for you to learn, but if you do what he does and some other sucker buys into it, you'll make money just like he did.
The positive reviews on this book are B.S. This is a book that has NO key ideas and NO insights that are fleshed out ... it's straight forward story telling and narration. What a waste!If you are looking to really learn something very insightful and useful, this is not the book. I highly recommend The Third Door which I just finished, which is also narration but at least you have a whole number of insights woven in.There are so many other books out there that have many many more insights than this book.
A different type of book. An entertaining and educational book that offers how a traditional approach to a career can be supercharged with learning from the nontraditional. Conversely, if challenged by the traditional track this book offers tips and tricks to get your career going faster when you are not going to walk the beaten path. Best of all is the lessons are wrapped in interesting stories that keep you engaged. Not your typical book, but then it is the outlier.
The author starts by boasting that he started his career by cheating people out of a lot of money -- which he justifies by says he technically did nothin illegal. He then offers a painfully detailed autobiography, using old cliches as section headings. This is not a business book or a guide to success -- it is one amoral creep trying to tell his life story. And a sad, heartless bastard' s story, told with no apology or heart. Total waste of time. Don't bother.
Bravo Kevin. Well done. I just read through the story of your life and i recognized myself in every page. I even bought a hard copy for my 19 years old presently studying computer Engineering (following in his father's footsteps) to teach him that it's OK to be an introvert and that what you are born to become in life is never decided on the basis of what people think about you. . Although my path was different considering my field of study but for some strange reason, like you there are certain things in life that i just knew. I don't know why.
