Choukri, who grew up illiterate before becoming one of Morocco's seminal writers, shares three distinctive portraits with progressive degrees of intimacy. Genet is often observed from a distance or recollected in short bits of passing conversation and these reprinted journal entries speak most to Choukri's own aspirations of becoming a writer. Williams's stint in Tangier in 1973 included countless languid café afternoons and dinner parties; the two writers were friends and these amicable passages provide satisfying windows of "real" life for a literary figure as mythic as Williams. But it is Bowles (who translated the first two sections of this book as well as Choukri's For Bread Alone) who comes most to life with depth and honesty in a portrait that is not always flattering (it is here too that the city of Tangiers becomes another vibrant character): "Paul Bowles loves Morocco, but does not really like Moroccans," Choukri reflects. Though it is clear from their years together that Bowles did indeed like Choukri; the tenderness with which they both age has less to do the veneer of fame than of men aware of their own mortality. this book consists of three parts: 1) "jean genet in tangier" from 1977 (without the photographs of the original) is 51 pages long. 2) "tennessee williams in tangier" from 1979 is 62 pages. 3) "paul bowles in tangier" is 179 pages and originally appeared in french in 1997. the first two are minimalist reports of various informal encounters. the essay on paul bowles is of a totally different type.when paul bowles wrote about morocco in the 1950s he din't imagine that at some later time he would be read and crticized by moroccan intellectuals (the first was tahar ben jelloun in 1972). bowles praised the traditional moroccan way of life but choukri charges that "there is something in him that is purely colonialist" and never explains what he means. he drops at least ten of these insubstantiated "bombs" and quickly moves on, as if nothing outrageous has been said, diverting attention to bowles' wife jane (whom choukri never met) until his next attack. some readers will find the various charges ridiculous, nasty or even deranged ("paul bowles is a potential sex criminal who never perpetrated his crimes"). it is typical of choukri's honesty however that a possible reason for his hostility emerges towards the end when he claims that bowles embezzled the money from the english editions of his excellent first book , "for bread alone".

Riveting. A wonderful look at a country and it's impact on the artists and expatriates who spend time there. Choukri is a very reliable witness to some truly remarkable men.

The Genet and Williams accounts by Mohamed Choukri (1935-2003), translated into English by Paul Bowles, appeared in the 1970s. "Paul Bowles in Tangier," translated faultlessly by Gretchen Head and John Garrett, is presented for the first time in this set (2008).TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, 71 pages, covering about 3 weeks, summer 1973An admirer of the playwright, Choukri makes it a point to meet him and his companion, a 25-year-old Englishman of isolated character whom Tennessee is tiring of. Choukri offers to help Tennessee find an apartment in Tangier; accompanies him on a visit to Paul Bowles and Mrabet; pumps Tennessee for remarks transcribable into Choukri's diary; gives the first volume of his autobiography to Tennessee, who likes it. And accompanies Tenn to pick up a box of mail, which the Moroccan authorities insist on reviewing, and confiscating a copy of Playboy containing a story by Williams. Bird (with a cackling laugh in response to so many things) of passage Williams has already decided to scram from Morocco, and send his companion Baxter "back to mother." Williams' work in progress was The Red Devil Battery Sign.JEAN GENET, 58 pages, covering Nov. 1968, Sept.-Oct. 1969, Feb. 1970The center piece is 1969 when Choukri, a devotee of French lit, has many get-togethers with Genet, who has seen his most productive years. Much literary talk, and Genet may surprise with his knowledge. He's sympathetic to Moroccan common folk. The big problem is getting a passport for Mohammed Zerrad,, to accompany Genet to Spain and France. In an afterword, Choukri jumps to 1980-1986: Genet endeavored to provide an education for his close companion El Katrani's son. On April 15, 1986, alone, Genet was suffocated by throat cancer. This volume, slight but emphatically revelatory, makes the Williams volume trivial by comparison.PAUL BOWLES, 181 pages, covering 1972-1995Choukri's association with the expatriate began when Bowles (1910-1999) translated the first volume of the Moroccan's autobiography (For Bread Alone, 1972) into English. He never knew Jane Bowles (1917-1973), whose stroke in 1957, followed by steadily deteriorating health, kept her hospitalized in Europe. Nevertheless, Choukri dissects both of them before our very eyes, having heard and read much (and directly experienced about a quarter century with Paul) about this very odd couple. An alcoholic and practicing lesbian and self-critic, Jane's creative writing talent rapidly choked off. In later life, Paul became a translator of Arabic works, including those of Choukri, who became embittered that Paul usurped credit, with the cooperation of publishers, and cheated Choukri of his royalties. In the present book, Choukri also makes withering remarks about other Tangerines, and criticizes outsiders who bemoan the disappearance of old Tangier: what those outsiders remember fondly was the cheap life that one with a little bit of money could have, plus the kif and marjoun. Choukri's writing style and exposition in this English translation (by Gretchen Head and John Garrett) is brilliant...and the Moroccan author is sharp-tongued and merciless.
