There will be no synopsis in my review. You can read that other places. I always enjoy meeting Hugh, his family, friends and even his enemies again. He is a thoughtful, humble man and--at first glance--not the stuff of which heroes are made, but he does heroic things to fulfill his obligations and his sense of right and wrong. His world is very well depicted, with interesting highlights of very early surgery techniques. This book takes Hugh out of his usual environment, which offers some new background for the story, but I missed his family, which is why I gave it four stars rather than five. Next time it would be nice to arrange somehow to take them along. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys historic mysteries that pull the reader gently into the time depicted, with the good and the bad parts included.

I always look forward to another Chronicle of Hugh de Singleton by Mel Starr. Please be aware that this particular book is very slim (only 150 pages devoted to the story plus another 10 pages of a look ahead to the next book). I would characterize this as a "short story" being sold by the publisher at a "novel' price

Medieval bailiff and surgeon Hugh de Singleton follows his liege lord to France to assist the English crown in holding on to its dwindling Aquitaine real estate. This relatively short novel is packed with intriguing information about the state of medicine and siege warfare of the time (1370), leaving the reader wishing for more. The mystery threaded into the center of the book involves the murder of Hugh's old adversary, Sir Simon Trillowe--his rival for his wife Kate and the man who once burned his house down. Protagonist de Singleton is the prime suspect in the killing because of his personal history with the victim, and is charged by the English Crown Prince Edward to prove is own innocence by solving the crime. Along the way, the reader learns a great deal about how soldiers of the time lived (food, clothing, recreation, etc.) and how the civilians fared during periods of warfare. This is actually one of the better books in the series for its generosity of detail about the period.

This would have been a 5 star book as the rest of his series has been except that it's being advertised and priced as novel #9 when it is in fact (At 133 pages) the size of a novella. However despite it being half the size of the rest of Mel's books our friend Hugh de Singleton does manage to do quite a bit in those 133 pages. The story itself is just as riveting and entertaining as the rest of the series though most of this one takes place in a different setting. The ending was a bit sobering but not unexpected for that time period. My favourite quote from this little book was "A man seldom gets in trouble for saying too little".

The previous two books in this series were beginning to become a bit formulaic, but with the plot centering around an invasion of France and the return of Hugh's old enemy, the storyline is infused with new energy. The characters are as crisp and clear as ever; the dialogue is far less wooden than when the series began; the story is engrossing and the climax a little bit unexpected. If Mel Starr continues to write about his medieval surgeon like this, waiting for the next book will become harder and harder to bear!

I started reading the series about the experiences of Hugh de Singleton at book #3 (because it was free) and then went back and paid for books #1 & #2 and all of the others in the series. If you enjoy mysteries set in a past time (medieval era), you'll love these stories. Each is a standalone book, but reading them in order helps you better understand why some things happen to Hugh. He's a fascinating character, and the tools and methods he uses to solve crimes and deal with unfair situations is an enlightening picture of daily life, medicine, religion, government and different segments of society in Europe in that century. I highly recommend the series, and I wish the author or publisher would speed up the pace of publishing these books.

Hugh is off to war with Sir Gilbert and it was a very enjoyable jaunt to battle, with all the pains and obstacles along the path. I thought the author accurately depicted how much the men missed their loved ones, and the boredom of waiting for battle. The mystery in this short book was interesting and I was glad to see Sir Simon finally receive his just reward for his unfailing infamy. I hope the next book is soon to come out - it was too short a visit with Hugh and his family.

I felt like I came into the middle of an adventure.I was all of a sudden in ancient Rome. I even went back to the previous book to see if I was somehow missing something! I was somewhat disappointed with this story. It didn't seem to be as "personal" as the other books in the series. I was so looking forward to it and my hopes were dashed.
