My A1C reached 6.5 a year ago, and my doctor told me that I have Type 2 Diabetes. My doctor sent me to a diabetic educator that helped me understand how I needed to eat if I was going to avoid or delay consequences of diabetes. I have adopted a low carb diet, with no more than 35 carbs per meal. I make sure that I eat at regular times, and I have stepped up my exercise and walking. My A1C dropped back to 5.8, so I am pretty happy.I watch my blood glucose on a regular basis, and I was surprised that even living within my 35 carb limit sometimes my blood glucose would spike, and take hours to come down. So carbs are not the whole story. The Glycemic Load explained why this was happening. I learned that my body does just fine with oranges, but bananas make my blood glucose go crazy. I enjoyed eating oatmeal for breakfast, but it found it really makes my blood glucose jump. With this information I can make better choices.I recommend this book for Type 2 Diabetics and Pre-Diabetics that is working to keep their blood glucose under control without medication.
Disclaimer- I know Dr. Thompson, and when I crossed over to the personal world of Type II Diabetes, he gave me a copy of his first edition. I saw the evidence of his 10+ years handling of his disease, so I implemented it and pounds literally melted off w/o undue hunger, particularly around my middle and my need for long-acting Insulin is minimal. As usual, there is some subsequent lapsing, so I bought his new edition to reclaim momentum. I'll never reach his commitment level- mashed cauliflower as a substitute for the Irish curse of eating potatoes!- but I will pursue his approach. Get good general management from your personal physician (without embracing new drugs like the dangerous Avandia) but make your care much easier by proper dietary behavior.Kevin M.O'Keeffe, MDPS I gave the first book to my daughter-in-law who has Polycystic Ovary Disease, a not rare disorder that also merits this approach.
A mid-life career change from a physically active job to a sedentary job coupled with full-time work/full-time college and eating fast food on the run had resulted in me being a 321 pound diabetic. My morning glucose had been running 180 for a while (with oral medication) and I was tired all the time. I knew I had to do something, but I kept putting it off. I started researching low-glycemic online and decided to get this book. 1/2 way thru, I just made the decision to do it, rather than continuing to put it off til I had more time. After 3 days on the diet, my morning glucose had dropped to 120 and I was more energetic. 1 month later, I've lost 20 pounds. I have 100 more pounds to lose and plan on having it off by June of 2016 (today is May 30, 2015). This is similar to Atkins, but very easy to follow. Basically, avoid grains (and grain products - bread, pasta, etc.), corn, rice, & potatoes. I know - it's everything I love, too, but it's also what landed me in this morbidly obese position. My blood sugar stays between 95 & 130 now and I am looking forward to losing the rest of the weight (I've accomplished 16% of my goal). For quick meals, I use the Atkins frozen meals (especially at work) and snack on peanut butter, fruits and vegetables between meals. Once you know the basics, it's easy to eat out without compromising. I also use the site peacelovelowcarb for recipe ideas. You won't regret starting the low-carb/glycemic lifestyle, especially if you are an overweight diabetic such as myself. My A1c was 6,8 before making the lifestyle change; I will be checking it again at Compunet after July 18th having been on the diet for 90 days to see how much I have improved. It's only $29 to get it checked. If I can remember, I will update the results then.
Simply put...this book will change your life if you're diabetic, overweight, or just feeling tired. Starch is the enemy, and this book proves it. Growing up and seeing grains in the food pyramid had me fooled most of my life...now that I've given them up, I feel and see the change and my numbers reflect it. My doctor was floored when my triglyceride levels dropped from super-high to normal in just three months. Make no mistake...this is a lifestyle change, not just a diet. But if you're on the verge of shooting up insulin everyday, read this book and try it. You owe it to yourself to find out the truth about why Americans are the fattest, unhealthiest people on the planet.
I was a little skeptical about it working. It sounded good. I didn't follow it perfectly. It will probably be even better if one did. After 3 weeks I went for my check up and every part of my lab work was awesome especially my A1C and glucose, but it cut my cholesterol by a fourth in just three weeks!
As a Type 2 diabetic whose last A1C was 10.1, this book has changed everything. Since beginning to follow Dr. Thompson's advice 3 months ago I've dropped 11 pounds, reduced my blood glucose average reading to ~110 (expecting a 5.8 A1C on my next labs) and have reduced my insulin requirement by 30%. Add to this that this book is easy to read and very informative for a non-technical reader AND I get to enjoy an ounce or 2 of dark chocolate and a sugar-free jello desert daily.
This book has been an eye opener! I started following the principles covered in the book and I have brought my blood glucose levels down 100 points. I can't wait for my next A1C test. I feel great and am losing weight too. I followed it exactly for first 3 weeks and now I'm learning how I can give a little and still maintain my lower glucose levels. This book explains just how our bodies work when you have Type 2.
