About the Author
Gary Kennedy served as general counsel of American Airlines for the final 10 years of his 30-year career at the airline. He directed its legal affairs during times of crisis and through many of the highest profile events in the company’s history. Terry Maxon is an award-winning journalist who wrote for newspapers in Dallas, Oklahoma City, and San Jose, CA, for 42 years. Like many AAlums I pre-ordered this book and waited eagerly for its arrival. I read it in one sitting this afternoon. Very readable, and handles some tricky issues in an even-handed way. An important story that's very well told, this book will be a valuable resource for students and enthusiasts of aviation and law for years to come.
Was hoping for a reasoned look back at what happened to a once seemingly invincible company and what could have been done differently. Instead, it included little to no introspection and was more about pointing fingers at others outside of AA management as the reason for collapse. Mr. Kennedy seems like a nice man, he just needed an editor to push him in a more open direction for the book.
To me it was a fascinating account of twelve years of American Airlines activity. I have a greater than average interest in aviation and legal matters, so for me it was hard for me to “put the book down†I finished it in 2 days. It was well-written and fast-paced account of a complex topic and easy to follow as it is written in layman’s language. I followed this in the news while it was happening and it was rewarding to now read “the behind the scenes account†of the American Airlines bankruptcy
Kennedy is a terrific storyteller. As an attorney who followed the challenges of American Airlines post-9/11, I found Kennedy’s book to not just be entertaining and a quick read, but, on a deeper level, also professionally informative. Kennedy’s prose, perhaps unintentionally, also underscores the dedication of American Airlines and its former general counsel to the values of ethics and principle in decision-making. Very refreshing in 2018!
I stopped reading when the author started to defend the golden parachutes that were taken after labor gave concessions. If you want to read a book about how “top talent†retains themselves while leading companies that are failing then this is for you.
This is a well-written, easy to understand history of the events leading to the merger of American Airlines and US Airways, and a fascinating behind-the-scenes peek at the legal and political challenges of the merger itself. Very enjoyable.
