About the Author
Nathan Englander is the author of the story collections For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, an international best seller, and What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, and the novels The Ministry of Special Cases and Dinner at the Center of the Earth. His books have been translated into twenty-two languages, and he is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a PEN/Malamud Award, the Frank O'Connor Award, the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts & Letters and was a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2013. His play The Twenty-Seventh Man premiered at the Public Theater in 2012. He is Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University and lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and daughter.

When secular Jew Larry goes to the home of his devout Orthodox sister Dina to sit shivah for their deceased father, it is not surprising that sparks should fly. Dina insists that Larry carry out the male responsibility to say kaddish, which requires multiple daily prayers for the dead for eleven months. This Larry refuses to do personally, but he finds a modern solution in kaddish.com, an internet site that will take over that responsibility for a fee. Finding Kaddish.com changes Larry’s life in ways neither he nor the reader could have predicted.The publisher describes Kaddish.com as “ a satire that touches, lightly and with unforgettable humor, on the conflict between religious and secular worlds, and the hypocrisies that run through both.†Often a reader’s reaction to a book will be shaped by their expectations and by their background. I suspect that this will be very true for Kaddish.com. The book was very well-written; I highlighted a number of short passages, such as when Larry responds to his observant sister’s criticism of Larry’s failure to follow the strict rules that family members sitting shivah sit on low uncomfortable platforms: “ ‘A stupid chair isn’t what makes it mourning,’ Larry says, doubling down. Though he knows, for his sister, a chair absolutely did. †This was a beautifully pithy summing of the situation and controversy in Larry’s relationship with his sister and with the religion in which he was raised. But was I supposed to see humor in this? Or pathos? Or both? I was uncertain then and throughout much of the book.I am not Jewish, but I have a lot of Jewish friends and both loved and learned a lot from Harry Kemelman’s Rabbi Small mystery series, so I know about minyans, mikvahs, and yeshivahs and know what “meshugenah†means, but there is a LOT of Hebrew and some Yiddish in the book that non-Jews (and possibly many Jews) would not know. The meanings are generally clear from context or do not matter, so for me the unknown words just added depth to the setting.But I suspect that my relatively superficial knowledge made it difficult for me to know just what was being satirized at many times. When I read about what seems to me to be the extreme devotion of the Orthodox yeshivah students and other devout Jews in the book, I felt I had to accept them at face value, but if this is a satire, perhaps they were extreme enough that they were supposed to be humorous. I just did not know and suspect many readers without a strong background in Judaism will feel as I did. There are also some extremely fantastic dream scenes where Larry/Shuli meets his dead father. These left me cold; perhaps I was supposed to laugh.Some of Larry/Shuli’s actions also seemed to me not too plausible. Some, such as his total rejection of computer technology, could be seen as rejecting modernity and accepting tradition, but I was uncertain if some others were weaknesses in the writing or part of the satire.In addition to my not being intimately familiar with Orthodox Judaism, it is perhaps too difficult for me to get into humor involving a subject like death. I did not get any laughs from Kaddish.com, but the author ended with a surprise twist that left me with an admiring smile on my face. I look forward to the book’s publication so that I can get feedback from reader friends with more in-depth knowledge of Orthodox Judaism .My thanks to edelweiss and the publisher for an advance review copy of this book.
