Well written history of the Zapotec civilization. I enjoyed reading it, and learned quite a bit from it.

History comes alive in excellently written book!
For a sort of overview of Zapotec Civilization, this might seem like an ok book... but the problem with it is that it really doesn't give any details to justify the statements made through the book about the Zapotec civilization. For example, it talks about the advanced military of the Zapotec civilization but gives absolutely no details to explain how the Zapotec civilization was militarily more advanced than their neighbors or even if they actually were. Fundamentally, it's a piece of fluff, not something that you will actually learn from.
Another of the cultures in Mesoamerica but without the massive structures and temples of some other cultures. They are also a culture that the Spanish conquerors wrote about. They formed into a culture around 2500 years ago.They had a belief that they descended from the clouds. (Could this be some kind of UFO-related event? Unknown.) They believed that everything that moved had a spirit which is not unlike a belief some Japanese have.Their culture expanded through politics and marriage with a little less emphasis on expanding through war. They also developed a hieroglyphic-type writing system. They were known for their delicate jewelry and their pottery. Their main crop was corn.The Aztecs and the Conquistadors pretty much put an end to their civilization.They did have some negative traits, at least it seems so to me. They ate dogs, practiced human sacrifice (including children) and even engaged in cannibalism. Oh, yes. If you were not of the ruling class then no chocolate for you!
This such an outstanding book, maybe my favorite thus far. Simply because I knew absolutely nothing about this civilization. Never heard of them & if I had I must have forgotten. I loved this book because everything was new so I acquired new knowledge of a subject.The Zapotecs were an advanced civilization, highly organized, with clear roles for its people. Just amazes me how a civilian can flourish for so long & then gradually decline, But, what’s interesting is the Zapotecs are still being studied. Archaeologists are still discovering artifacts & trying to piece together a new understanding of these people. As always much of what we know is from the biased account of the Spanish conquistadors. With new information still being found in discoveries of this civilization new published materials will help give the Zapotecs a place in history that its deserves.Once again , congratulations to the Captivating History staff & Mr. Matt Clayton om another job well done.
